An etching by the German engraver, etcher and lithographer, William Unger (1837-1932) based on the work ‘Venice pays tribute to Caterina Cornaro’ by the Austrian painter Hans Makart (1840-1884).
The painting was created by Makart between 1872 and 1873 and depicts the last Queen of the Kingdom of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro (1454-1510) being honored by the Republic of Venice.
The almost eleven-meter-long painting was first presented to a vast public at the Kunstlerhaus, where Makart’s dealers Miethke & Wawra organized a special exhibition during Vienna’s World Exposition in 1873.
The painting is currently housed at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna.
