Athina Tarsouli was born in Athens in 1884.

Around 1915 she had her first painting lessons and five years later she settled down in Paris to study painting and drawing in the studio of Suzanne Hurel. Her stay in the French capital and contact with the artistic movements of the time influenced her initial output.

The folklore studies of Angeliki Hatzimichali (1895-1956) first published in the early 1920s influenced Tarsouli's historiographical and literary work. She devoted her life to the study of the Greek tradition, documenting the daily customs, traditions, crafts and clothing of rural Greece.

He artistic output consists of landscapes, works depicting traditional costumes, handwoven fabrics and embroideries, ceramics and architecture in oil, watercolour and Indian ink. Inspired from the Greek nature, history and tradition she delivers her subjects with absolute consciousness of their aesthetic, historical and national importance with simplicity, honesty and spontaneity.

Invited by the Church of Cyprus, Tarsouli visited Cyprus, toured the entire island gathering historical, folklore and other information. The fruit of her research was the book 'Cyprus' published in two volumes, the first in 1955 and the second in 1963. For this work she was awarded by the Academy of Athens; this book has plenty of information about the island, its cities and villages, its history and monuments, its life and people. The book is adorned with paintings and drawings from Cyprus that she created.

Her work is found in public and private collections, notably: The National Gallery of Greece, Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras and Volos Municipal Galleries, the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation and the Benaki Museum.
